Lawn Fertilization That Builds Real Results
Custom feeding programs matched to your soil, your grass type, and South Dakota's seasons. No guesswork, no burn — just a thicker, greener lawn year after year.
Your Lawn Is Only as Good as What's Underneath It
Mowing keeps your lawn looking neat. Fertilization is what keeps it alive. Without consistent, properly timed feeding, even the best-maintained yard in Sioux Falls will thin out, lose color, and get overrun by weeds — because weeds thrive in nutrient-starved soil that your grass can't compete in.
South Dakota's cool-season grasses — Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, and fine fescues — have two peak growth windows: spring and fall. That's when nitrogen demand is highest and when the right fertilizer application makes the biggest difference. Miss those windows, and you're playing catch-up all season.
Our 5-Round Fertilization Program
Each round is timed to your lawn's growth stage and uses a specific nutrient blend. Here's what a typical season looks like:
Round 1 — Early Spring (Late April)
Slow-release nitrogen with pre-emergent crabgrass control. Feeds the lawn as it breaks dormancy while preventing annual weeds before they germinate. We time this when soil temps hit 55°F — too early and the pre-emergent breaks down before crabgrass germinates.
Round 2 — Late Spring (Early June)
Balanced N-P-K blend with broadleaf weed control. This is when your lawn is growing fastest and can absorb the most nutrients. We target dandelions, clover, and creeping charlie during their active growth phase when herbicide uptake is highest.
Round 3 — Summer (Mid-July)
Light nitrogen with iron supplement and insect control if needed. We back off heavy nitrogen during heat stress to avoid burn. The iron provides color without pushing top growth that the roots can't sustain in 90°F+ heat. Grub preventative goes down now if your property has a history of grub damage.
Round 4 — Early Fall (September)
The most important application of the year. Heavy nitrogen feeding during fall's second growth surge — this is when your lawn builds the root reserves that determine how it looks next spring. Cool nights and warm soil create ideal conditions for nutrient uptake. We also address any remaining broadleaf weeds.
Round 5 — Winterizer (Late Oct/Nov)
Quick-release nitrogen applied just before the final mow. The grass blades have slowed but roots are still active, storing carbohydrates for winter survival. This application is responsible for your lawn greening up 2–3 weeks earlier next spring.
Products & Equipment
We use professional-grade, slow-release fertilizers from suppliers like Lebanon Turf, Andersons, and Koch Agronomic. These aren't the same products you'll find at a big-box store — they're formulated for commercial application with controlled-release nitrogen coatings that feed for 6–8 weeks without surge growth or burn risk.
Every application is made with calibrated rotary spreaders for even distribution. We overlap each pass by 30% to eliminate streaking — those light and dark stripes you see on poorly fertilized lawns. Edges and tight areas get a targeted drop-spreader pass to keep product off hardscapes and out of waterways.
Why Soil Testing Matters
Most Sioux Falls soils are alkaline clay with a pH between 7.2 and 7.8. At that pH, certain nutrients — especially iron and phosphorus — get locked up in the soil and become unavailable to grass roots, no matter how much fertilizer you apply. A $30 soil test tells us exactly what your lawn needs and what it doesn't.
We recommend baseline soil testing for new customers and retesting every 2–3 years. Results guide our fertilizer selection: if your phosphorus is already high (common in established lawns), we'll use a zero-phosphorus blend. If iron is deficient, we'll add chelated iron to green up the lawn without excess nitrogen. It's the difference between guessing and knowing.
